I Get by with a Little (Access Modeling) Help from my Friends

I have the unique opportunity to talk to organizations across the world about their identity challenges. Throughout these conversations I am struck by the scale and complexity of new users joining the organization, moving between departments or leaving the organization as part of the normal course of business. When you add in all the applications and systems, many of these organizations get tangled in a web of user access that can quickly blind and overwhelm.

Without visibility how can you ensure your users have the right access to do their jobs efficiently, know that you’re in compliance, or feel confident that your roles and policies are staying ahead of today’s innovative security threats?

When I hear these questions, I am consistently reminded of the value that a role program can provide in seamlessly giving your new and changing employees the access they need and aligning that access with the changing access in the business. But I also hear “we aren’t sure where to start,” or “building a role program takes too long and we just don’t have the resources right now.”

Your first challenge is collecting and curating all the access and identity information across your IT landscape. Normalizing, standardizing and warehousing all your data requires precious time and money before you can even invest in analysis and collaboration. This is often months of effort before you are ready to even get value from a role model.

Even further, understanding your patterns of data, communicating them in a way your business can digest, and operationalizing all this business knowledge may mean moving mountains for the largest organizations. For smaller organizations, they may not have the expertise or resources to go down this path. When I speak with customers and prospects this is often years of effort and many are ultimately unsuccessful.

What we need is a role model that is easy to start but flexible and dynamic enough for a changing business. We need to rethink identity and how we approach modeling access.

Given these deep challenges, SailPoint has introduced a new Access Modeling service that uses a patented AI and machine learning process to automate the creation of roles. Because this is deeply integrated with the SailPoint platform you don’t have to do additional normalization, standardization and analysis to find patterns of data ideal for a role model.

Whether you are a Fortune 500 organization trying to simplify and focus your limited resources on improving your existing role program, or a mid-sized organization just getting started, SailPoint Access Modeling can offer the deep analysis, automated onboarding and simple security needed to have successful role program.
