The SailPoint crew celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexico Independence Day

This month, the SailPoint crew is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexico Independence Day! Our crew is a diverse, multicultural group, and we’re always striving to learn more about each other. Read on to hear from four SailPoint crew members as we celebrate these observances this month!

Tell us a little about yourself!

Rose Cobb, Senior Customer Marketing Manager

Rose Cobb: I am a Senior Customer Marketing Manager, and at the time of writing this, I’ve been with SailPoint for 4 years, 4 months, and 6 days. I enjoy being a customer marketing manager, it combines several areas of interest for me, so there’s never a dull moment! I also appreciate the generous WFH and PTO policies, as I am able to take time to care for my son and parents as needed.

Oscar Garza, IT Support Specialist

Oscar Garza: In my current role as an IT Support Specialist, I’ve had the pleasure of being a part of SailPoint for about a year now. What I find most fulfilling about my role is working with an exceptional team. We collectively thrive on collaboration and continuously strive to find the best solutions for our colleagues within our company. Each day brings new challenges and opportunities for growth, which keeps me energized and motivated.

Sofia Barcos, Senior Analyst

Sofia Barcos: I am a Senior Analyst on the FP&A team. I just hit two years at SailPoint this August! I really enjoy working with my team here at SailPoint – we support and encourage each other to bring our best selves forward and continue growing.

Chris Murrillo, Sales Proposal Analyst

Chris Murrillo: I am a Sales Proposal Analyst and proud member of the Deal Advancement Resource Team (D.A.R.T.). I’ve been with SailPoint for about 4 years now, but I started as a Facilities Assistant back in 2019. I have to say my favorite thing about working at SailPoint is the people. I’ve met lots of different types of personalities with different interests in different stages of life, but everyone has been super nice.

Why do you think it’s important for companies to recognize and celebrate observances like Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexico Independence Day?

Rose Cobb: Celebrating cultural events creates a more inclusive work environment; it helps employees feel seen and shows that their identities matter. And with HQ being in Austin, Texas, there is an opportunity to highlight and celebrate the diverse population of this great state.

Oscar Garza: First, it makes employees feel seen and appreciated for who they are, which can boost morale and team spirit. Second, it’s a fantastic way for all of us to learn about different cultures and traditions in a fun and engaging way. It’s like a cultural exchange right at the office! So, in a nutshell, it’s about making everyone feel valued and giving us all a chance to expand our horizons.

Sofia Barcos: I believe it gives those who are celebrating a chance to showcase their culture and can empower employees to authentically contribute a variety of diverse perspectives to the workplace. Celebrating observances like Hispanic Heritage Month also allows employees who may not have had exposure to different cultures to learn something new about their peers.

Chris Murrillo: I think it’s important for a company to observe these occasions to recognize that people come from different cultures. When companies recognize different cultures, I feel it shows appreciation for diversity in the workplace.

What are some of your favorite ways to celebrate your culture?

Rose Cobb: This time of year is my favorite, as I have many fond memories of Halloween growing up. From watching horror movies with my mom to scary stories passed down from generation to generation – I can’t get enough of all things dark and spooky. Even my son knows all about El Cucuy! We celebrate Halloween and Día de los Muertos in our household; those are the only holidays where I dial everything up to 11.

Oscar Garza: One of the things I really enjoy in celebrating my culture is through the joy of food. Especially during winter, I get to eat my favorite dish ever, Pozole. But it is not just about the food; it is about bringing the whole family together. It is a heartwarming way to connect with each other.

Sofia Barcos: Food is definitely one of my favorite love languages. I’m lucky to have been taught a few classic family recipes from Argentina, so being able to recreate some nostalgic dishes (like empanadas or any dessert with dulce de leche) always takes me back to Buenos Aires.

Chris Murrillo: THE FOOD! I love Mexican food and the history behind it. I love seeing how popular dishes today came from humble beginnings, like the famous carnitas from Michoacan. My go-to is Carne Asada; it’s what my family made whenever we had any kind of gathering. I make this almost every time we have a game night at my place; friends know that’s how I show love.

What would you teach a friend, colleague, or your children about the importance of cultural remembrances, like Hispanic Heritage Month and Mexico Independence Day?

Rose Cobb: I talk to my son about his heritage all the time, and I have him enrolled in a dual language program (English/Spanish) at school so he can get more exposure to the language and culture. Celebrating cultural holidays and festivals is one of the ways someone can cherish and find joy in their identity. It also provides a connection to the greater community and helps remind us that we are not alone.

Oscar Garza: It is about enjoying the present with those you care about. It is a time to celebrate our heritage, stories, and great foods. These occasions bring us closer to each other to have a great time and make memories.

Sofia Barcos: Having moved to the U.S. when I was 5 years old, there’s a lot of Argentinean history and traditions that I haven’t experienced as organically. That being said, pursuing and learning those significant cultural aspects independently has allowed me to feel closer to my family and where I come from. I believe that understanding our history is an important facet of engaging in our community, whether that be sharing with others or celebrating our differences.

Chris Murrillo: The importance of observing these occasions is deep. It helps us recognize the contributions different cultures bring to society.

At SailPoint, our people are everything. This is a place where everyone matters. We’ve built an environment of trust, acceptance, and shared respect that helps us do great things, and celebrating holidays is a great reminder that we encourage everyone to show up as their true selves.
