LAS VEGAS, December 5, 2018 –  A new poll from SailPoint Technologies Holdings, Inc. (NYSE: SAIL), the leader in enterprise identity governance reveals that software bots are being widely deployed but are not properly governed today. During an informal poll at the Gartner IAM Summit in Las Vegas this week, 70% of IT leaders surveyed confirmed their organizations are actively using software bots in place of humans to drive business efficiencies. However, only 5% are governing the access rights these bots have. Given that some software bots may be accessing sensitive applications and data, organizations need to rethink how a “user” is defined to ensure they have full visibility and control over access rights of all users, human and non-human.

Software bots are being introduced into the workforce today as a way to free up their human counterparts to focus on more strategic and business-critical projects. Many companies are employing software bots to carry out simple tasks like chatting with end users or booking travel. Others are using them for more sensitive tasks like automating claims processing or monitoring and reporting on operational processes in oil and gas or mining facilities. This is an increasingly risky practice if these software bots’ access is left unmanaged and ungoverned.

“It is surprising just how broadly software bots are already being adopted by organizations today, certainly at a quicker pace than predicted. Organizations not governing bots’ access have a sizable area of exposure that needs to be addressed,” said Paul Trulove, Chief Product Officer, SailPoint. “Fortunately, since software bots interact with the IT ecosystem in a similar way that a human user does, enterprises can govern them similarly, including certifying their access regularly to ensure they only have the necessary access privileges, and no more. With the proper identity governance controls in place, organizations can securely and confidently take advantage of the efficiencies that software bots provide.”

SailPoint’s open identity platform helps organizations of all sizes drive a comprehensive approach to identity governance. With SailPoint, organizations can extend their identity program to include software bots and technology like robotic process automation (RPA) to govern all of their digital identities, spanning humans and non-human devices, that are accessing an organization’s applications, systems and data.
