Great News: Mark and Kevin Recently Named “Entrepreneurs of the Year”!

I’m thrilled to announce that Ernst & Young named SailPoint’s CEO Mark McClain and President Kevin Cunningham “Entrepreneurs Of The Year.” The award recognizes what our team has seen first-hand over the years: Mark and Kevin have a long history of excellence in leadership and personal commitment to their company, employees and community, as well as a deep-seeded motivation to drive the IAM industry forward.

Mark and Kevin’s story started long before SailPoint. The two, who still share an office, met working in product and marketing positions at Tivoli, prior to its acquisition by IBM. They embarked on their entrepreneurial path together in 1999, when they partnered with two other colleagues to start Waveset, which was ultimately acquired by Sun Microsystems for $150 million in late-2003. And then in 2005, they made the plunge again, starting SailPoint with Jackie Gilbert.

Looking back over SailPoint’s history, it’s impressive to see Mark and Kevin’s imprint on our company (which now has almost 450 employees and 11 offices around the world). We’ve grown from a startup in the early years to being one of the largest, independent IAM vendors in the market. And, Deloitte has named us the fastest growing IAM vendor for two consecutive years on their Fast 500 list. Today, SailPoint boasts hundreds of customers around the world – and we’re proud to say they’re seeing real value from our IAM solutions.

Throughout our incredible growth, Mark and Kevin made sure that SailPoint maintained our corporate culture and stayed true to their commitment to the market: we will always deliver the best customer service in the industry and we will also drive innovation into the market. That vision and commitment feed an incredible work environment, where employees feel challenged and empowered, and genuinely enjoy our work. That may be why SailPoint has been named a “Best Places to Work” for six consecutive years (and yes, we’re hiring!).

In addition to creating an awesome place to work, Mark and Kevin’s leadership has had a remarkable impact SailPoint and the IAM market. Here’s just a small sampling of examples:

  • SailPoint debuted in the market with a business-friendly user interface and risk-based approach that was unheard of that time. We coined the term “identity governance” and focused the market on addressing business challenges for our customers.
  • SailPoint quickly realized that legacy solutions were outdated, and identity governance could add immediate value to a commoditizing market, and as such, expanded into the provisioning market with a governance-based approach to end-to-end IAM. Since then, more than 100 customers have migrated away from outdated tools offered by the industry dinosaurs.
  • Not wanting to rest on our laurels, SailPoint paid a lot of attention to the emerging cloud technologies. In addition to making sure IdentityIQ managed on-prem, cloud and mobile applications, we also built and delivered the industry’s first enterprise-grade IdM solution delivered from the cloud (IDaaS). Just recently, our market momentum was recognized as we leap-frogged many vendors to be named a Visionary in this year’s Gartner IDaaS Magic Quadrant.
  • SailPoint’s imprint on the IAM market, and Mark and Kevin’s vision for the future, is why the company continues to be named as the Leader in the Gartner IGA Magic Quadrant, among other industry reports.

As someone who worked with Mark and Kevin during their time at Waveset, and as a SailPoint employee for the past seven years, I’ve had a front row seat to their leadership. And I can speak for my current and past colleagues, as well as our partners, customers and industry supporters, when I say that this award is incredibly well deserved (and incredibly hard earned). Mark and Kevin are clearly committed to building a strong team while maintaining our unique corporate culture, and they’re equally committed to making sure our customers and partners are successful. And importantly, they’ve acted as genuine mentors to countless employees over the years.
